Character Creation Essentials
- Choose a race and class that sounds fun to you, not just what seems most powerful [1]
- Your character's ability scores determine what they're good at (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma)
- Consider your character's background - it provides skills, equipment, and roleplaying hooks
- Don't worry about optimizing everything - focus on creating a character you'll enjoy playing

Roleplaying Tips
- Create a simple backstory that explains why your character became an adventurer
- Develop 1-3 distinctive personality traits that make your character memorable
- Think about your character's goals - what do they want to achieve?
- Consider your character's relationships with other party members - why do you work together?
- Don't be afraid to speak in character, but it's also fine to describe what your character says

Combat Basics
- Initiative determines turn order - it's a Dexterity check at the start of combat **[2][3]**
- On your turn, you can move and take one action (attack, cast a spell, use an item, etc.)
- Remember your character's special abilities from their race and class
- Attack rolls = d20 + ability modifier + proficiency bonus (if proficient) **[4][5]**
- Saving throws are used when avoiding effects - roll d20 + ability modifier + proficiency bonus (if proficient)
